Dublin-based experimental indie band Akrobat will release their new single “Mosquito” on March 22, 2024, offering a preview of their upcoming EP “Shank.”
Akrobat, known for their experimental approach to indie music, is set to release their latest single, “Mosquito,” on March 22, 2024. The single pairs funky rhythms with lush instrumentation and tongue-in-cheek lyrics, highlighting the band’s creative talent and the impressive vocal range of lead singer Selen Korkutan. The term “Mosquito” is used metaphorically to represent human behavior and the cycle of consumption, delving into the themes of unending desire and the monotonous repetition inherent in the pursuits of life.
The track was engineered, mixed, and mastered by Rian Trench at The Meadow. A live performance video, produced by Ray Beggan, was recorded at Dublin’s Beardfire Studios during a dedicated session for Chris Redjam’s Across the Horizon UK radio show. This video aims to capture the raw energy and charisma of the band.
Following the success of their previous single “Verlaine,” which received airplay on Radio X and various international stations, “Mosquito” signals a new direction for Akrobat. The forthcoming EP “Shank,” scheduled for release on March 29, 2024, continues the band’s exploration of funk, rhythm, and electro-pop, with a focus on live recording and experimental sounds.
Shane Regan, Akrobat’s frontman, explains, on ‘Mosquito’: “We have embraced more funk-oriented leanings, with our rhythm section really giving the song some groove. We have mixed the music up with some synthesisers and experimental guitar work, topped off with a stunning vocal performance from Selen.”
Akrobat’s diverse lineup, which includes influences from Irish, Turkish, and Spanish cultures, contributes to their unique sound. The band moves seamlessly between indie, garage, electronica, new-wave punk, funk, and jazz, drawing comparisons to artists like Prince, Television, and The Velvet Underground. The EP “Shank” will explore themes of conflict, excitement, and loss, offering a fresh perspective on contemporary music.
