South-West England-based producer and composer Jim Godfrey has released a new EP titled The Abominatron, available on all major streaming platforms as of August 2024. The EP, which features three tracks, is a tribute to the MOOG synthesizer, an iconic instrument in the history of electronic music. Godfrey’s latest work blends the classic sounds of the MOOG with contemporary production techniques, drawing inspiration from artists such as Air, Hot Chip, and Public Service Broadcasting.
The title track, The Abominatron, includes a sample of Bob Moog himself discussing the synthesizer, grounding the EP in its historical roots. The track combines rich MOOG voices with a mournful piano, creating a slow-driving groove that highlights Godfrey’s skill in merging past and present musical elements. The EP continues with Social Climber, an atmospheric electro/piano groove that features a melancholic piano motif and a prominent MOOG solo. The final track, Twenty Years Ago Today, serves as a nostalgic homage to the Sgt. Pepper’s era, blending sweet piano elements with live piano vibes reminiscent of the 1970s.
Veteran guitarist Joe Short, known for his work with punk legend Siouxsie Sioux, contributes to the title track, adding depth and texture to the overall sound of the EP. Godfrey’s background as a multi-instrumentalist and his extensive experience in jazz, electronica, and sound production are evident throughout the EP, showcasing his ability to blend diverse influences into a cohesive whole.
In a statement, Godfrey described the EP as a “labor of love,” emphasizing his intent to blend the MOOG sounds with piano and vocal samples in a way that respects their heritage while remaining relevant in the modern day. Positive feedback from early listeners highlights the effective incorporation of the MOOG, with one reviewer noting that the instrument serves as the “centerpiece” of the EP, adding that it “flexes its muscles” with vintage fire.
Godfrey’s previous works, including his 2021 album San Francisco and his 2023 experimental piece Deconstructed Piano Works vol 1, provide context for his evolution as an artist. His involvement in politics and music, along with his collaborations with notable artists, have contributed to his unique approach to music production.
The EP’s release aligns with broader trends in electronica, where there is a renewed interest in classic synthesizers and a blending of historical and modern sounds. As Godfrey continues to explore this direction, The Abominatron positions itself as a significant contribution to the genre.
