MARBELLA, Spain (TLEG) — Funky District, the Paris-based duo known for their fusion of live instrumentation and modern soundscapes, has teamed up with Philadelphia Nu Funk artist Nic Hanson on their new single, “Radar.” The song brings together live funk grooves, smooth vocals, and neo-soul influences for a compelling take on the laws of attraction.
“Radar” marks the second single off Funky District’s upcoming EP, “Now What?” The track, written, composed, and produced in just one hour, features live bass, guitar, and saxophone. The musicians layered the live elements to enhance the song’s organic feel. “We wanted something that feels immediate and raw but still polished,” said Funky District in a press release.
The track was inspired by personal experiences and explores themes of connection through the metaphor of a radar. “This track is about attraction, how people send and receive signals in ways that aren’t always obvious,” Funky District said. Hanson vocal delivery provides a blend of warmth and subtle intensity, elevating the narrative.
Heathcliff, a curator at The Lions Ground Entertainment Group, reviewed the song and described it as “polished and groovy, with strong live instrumentation that stands out.” The live bassline and saxophone are standout features, driving the track’s rhythm and adding depth. The song’s introspective tone and neo-soul influences align with modern trends in funk and R&B.
The production quality was praised for its clarity and balance. The mix ensures each instrument stands out while maintaining cohesion. “Radar” also scored high in danceability and relaxation metrics, reflecting its accessibility for both casual listening and reflective moments.
The cover art for “Radar” depicts an old-school computer on a diner table, evoking a sense of retro-futurism. According to Heathcliff, the muted tones and grainy texture align with the song’s introspective vibe, though he suggested the addition of brighter colors to better reflect the music’s vibrant energy.
The collaboration with Nic Hanson continues Funky District’s effort to blend live performance with contemporary production. The duo and Hanson previously collaborated on a single in 2022, setting the stage for their current partnership. Their ability to create a cohesive sound while embracing diverse influences has drawn attention from fans of funk and neo-soul alike.
“Radar” is available on streaming platforms, including Spotify and Apple Music. Funky District’s EP, “Now What?” is set to release early next year.
