The track, which blends elements of Jazz-Hop and Neo-Soul, serves as a nostalgic tribute to the simpler joys of childhood. Supported by the Arts Council of Ireland, this release not only showcases the talents of two rising stars in the Irish Hip-Hop scene but also offers a glimpse into the genre’s evolving landscape.
The collaboration between Odd Numbers and FYNCH is a testament to the power of remote partnerships in the digital age. “This track was a remote collaboration between myself and FYNCH,” Odd Numbers shared. “We never got to hit the studio together for this one, but he completely understood the assignment.”
Inspired by the iconic J Dilla, Odd Numbers was reading the Dilla Time book when he felt a surge of inspiration. “I was feeling super inspired and tried emulating some of his production techniques,” he said. FYNCH added, “This track is an ode to the basics — childhood wonderment and blissful ignorance to the state of the world.”
The track features a unique blend of Jazz-Hop and Neo-Soul, genres that have been gaining traction in the Irish music scene. Odd Numbers’ off-kilter drums and swung groove pair beautifully with FYNCH’s smooth, laid-back delivery, creating a soundscape that is both fresh and nostalgic.
FYNCH’s lyrics in ‘Uncut Gems’ reflect a yearning for simpler times, specifically his childhood days when all he cared about was playing Smackdown Vs. Raw. “There’s acceptance of the fact that a simplistic life isn’t in the offing, but we can all dream for a few minutes, can’t we?” he mused.
‘Uncut Gems’ is part of Odd Numbers’ forthcoming EP ‘Colours,’ which is also supported by the Arts Council of Ireland. The EP is expected to provide a further glimpse into Odd Numbers’ exploration of Jazz-Hop and Neo-Soul.
This new single follows the successful release of three other tracks from Odd Numbers’ upcoming EP: Parkgate Street (feat. Graham), Born in a Barn (feat. Flynn Johnson), and Love Me, Hate Me (feat. Wallfella). Each track showcases Odd Numbers’ dedication to honing a fresh sound, taking cues from multiple eras of Hip-Hop.
Matt Miles of Yack! Magazine praised Odd Numbers, stating, “From the Emerald Isle comes the sparkling green jewel in the crown of the indie and alternative Hip-Hop scene.” Darian Burns of Dope Hip-Hop added, “With his talent behind the boards and artist-first mentality, I see nothing but success for the rising producer.”
Golden Éire Records, the independent label behind the release, aims to connect the dots between Ireland’s numerous cliques and collectives in the Hip-Hop scene. The label plans to serve its audience with a highly curated selection of music, live events, merchandise, and video content.
With the backing of the Arts Council of Ireland and the growing reputation of both artists, ‘Uncut Gems’ is anticipated to make a significant impact on the Irish Hip-Hop scene, further solidifying Odd Numbers and FYNCH as key players in the genre’s evolution.
